AP: Obama Is "Certainly Friendly" With Ayers, But To Claim They "Pal Around" Is Racist

The AP writes:

In February, Obama strategist David Axelrod told the Politico Web site: "Bill Ayers lives in his neighborhood. Their kids attend the same school. They're certainly friendly, they know each other, as anyone whose kids go to school together." But while Ayers and Obama are acquainted, the charge that they "pal around" is a stretch of any reading of the public record.

Are they friendly?
Certainly.

Do they pal around?
Certainly not.

Anyone who disagrees is a racist. And this concludes today's lesson.

Doesn't anyone in the Obama camp realize that it's virtually impossible for the Ayres kids and the Obama kids to be attending school together? I am about the same age as Ayers and my children range in age from 28-34. I don't know just how old the Obama girls are but I would be surprised if the older one was past junior high. David Axelrod is dancing.

The AP story said the attacks "carried a racially tinged subtext", not that Palin was a racist. If you listen to the remarks, I don't think this is an unreasonable judgment.

But the larger point is who cares about the Obama/Ayers connection? Ayers is now a well-respected proponent of education reform in Chicago. But even if he wasn't, the alleged connection between Obama and Ayers doesn't say anything about Obama's policies.

As McCain aides have admitted, the entire point of the Palin attacks is to change the subject from the economic crisis to issues of "character". Don't you think our democracy is better served by a discussion of important issues (Iraq, healthcare, the economy) than guilt-by-association mud-slinging?

mcjenny,

You are right. And Axelrod's dancing is comically bad.

1peter,

Is there any way to attack The One without being called a "racist"? My bad, without "carrying a racially tinged subtext"?

But the larger point is who cares about the Obama/Ayers connection?

Oh, I think lots of folks would care if they knew. But since you contend it's no big deal, why don't we just make sure the voters get all the information, and then we'll see what happens?

Ayers is now a well-respected proponent of education reform in Chicago.

He's "well respected" among a certain leftist segment of the population, but he remains to this day a self-described communist who visited Comrade Chavez in November 2006 to cheer on La Revolucion.

Clearly I find the Obama/Ayers connection unpersuasive and you find it persuasive. There will be a definitive poll on that on November 4th.

Here is why I find it unpersuasive and why I think undecided voters will too. It doesn't reflect on how Obama will govern. So Obama served on a charity board with a former domestic radical from thje days when Obama was in grade school. What exactly does that tell you about the policies Obama will implement? Maybe you can come up with something, but the Palin attacks don't even bother. Instead the attacks are designed to create mistrust about Obama. I don't believe those sorts of character attacks do justice to our democratic process.

I keep answering you (in the other threads), but you keep ignoring my response. It reflects on his judgment and it reflects on the people he is likely appoint as judges, ambassadors, cabinet members and the like.

Also, Ayers is not a "former" domestic radical. He is a former terrorist, but is very much still a domestic radical to this day.

Finally, the Ayers thing cannot be viewed in isolation. It fits together with the larger picture of America-hating, anti-Semitic scumbags Obama calls friends -- Rev Wright, Ayers, Dohr, Pfleger, Khalidi, Rezko, etc.
